How to Audit Your Own Affiliate Activity Before Scaling Up

3 min read

Growth Without a Foundation Is Just Noise

Scaling up sounds appealing at almost every stage of a publisher's affiliate journey. More campaigns, more verticals, more traffic — the instinct to expand is understandable. But publishers who scale without first auditing what they already have often find that they are simply doing more of what is inefficient, at greater cost and with greater complexity.

A structured self-audit, carried out before any significant expansion, is one of the most practical steps a publisher can take. It does not require sophisticated tools or outside expertise — it requires honesty, attention to the data already available, and a willingness to act on what you find.

Four Areas to Examine Before You Scale

1. Campaign-Level Performance

Begin by reviewing each active campaign in your portfolio. For each one, ask: is this programme still aligned with my audience? Have conversion rates remained consistent, improved, or declined over recent months? Are there programmes you are still running out of habit rather than because they genuinely perform?

Publishers often find that a meaningful proportion of their campaigns are generating only marginal activity. Consolidating around the programmes that consistently perform well is nearly always more productive than maintaining a long tail of underperforming ones.

2. Promotional Channel Efficiency

Consider not just what you are promoting, but how you are promoting it. Which channels — email, editorial content, comparison pages, social — are delivering the most consistent results relative to the effort and cost involved? If one channel is absorbing significant time but contributing little measurable value, that is worth addressing before replicating the same pattern at scale.

This is also a good moment to assess whether your promotional methods are fully compliant with current advertiser requirements and ASA/CAP guidelines. Compliance issues that are manageable at a small scale can become significant problems once volume increases.

3. Audience and Offer Alignment

The strongest affiliate results consistently come from a tight fit between the audience a publisher serves and the offers they promote. Take an honest look at whether your current programme mix genuinely reflects what your audience values and needs. An offer that looked promising at launch may no longer fit your readership profile — or your readership may have evolved in a direction your current programme mix has not kept pace with.

Your network account manager can be a useful sounding board here. They have visibility across many publisher models and can often identify gaps or opportunities that are difficult to see from inside your own operation.

4. Operational Reliability

Scaling up introduces operational pressure. Before doing so, it is worth checking whether your current setup is genuinely reliable. Are tracking implementations consistent and regularly verified? Are you receiving and reviewing performance reports frequently enough to catch issues early? Is your communication with your network team proactive or reactive?

Publishers who enter a growth phase with operational gaps tend to find those gaps magnified, not resolved, by increased volume.

Turning Audit Findings Into a Scaling Plan

The output of a self-audit should not be a long list of problems — it should be a prioritised set of actions. Typically, this means: reinforcing what is clearly working, addressing the two or three issues most likely to limit growth, and only then identifying where expansion makes sense.

Involving your network at this stage is genuinely worthwhile. A managed performance network like STP Media holds data and context across the full publisher and advertiser ecosystem that can sharpen your own analysis significantly. The network's interest in your growth is real — when publishers scale well, the entire partnership benefits.

Scaling is most effective when it is intentional. An audit makes the intention concrete, and the network makes the execution stronger. If you are preparing to grow your affiliate activity and would like to talk through your current setup, our publisher team is available to help.
