How to Have a More Productive Relationship With Your Affiliate Network

3 min read

Engagement Is the Differentiator

Inside any affiliate network, there is a spectrum of publisher engagement. At one end are publishers who sign up, select a handful of campaigns, and check in occasionally when a payment is due. At the other end are publishers who treat the network as an active partner — communicating regularly, providing feedback on campaigns, flagging issues early, and asking questions that help their account manager help them more effectively.

The difference in outcomes between these two approaches is not primarily about traffic volume or audience size. It is about the quality of information flowing in both directions. A publisher who shares what is and is not working gives their account manager something to act on. A publisher who disappears between payouts gives the network nothing to work with — and typically receives very little in return beyond a basic service.

This is not a criticism of busy publishers managing multiple priorities. It is a practical observation: the return you get from a network relationship is largely proportional to what you put into it, in terms of communication and transparency rather than just traffic.

What Good Engagement Actually Looks Like

Productive engagement with a network does not require daily contact or lengthy reports. It means making the most of the touchpoints you have and being honest about your situation and needs.

Concretely, this might include:

  • A brief monthly check-in with your account manager — not to review every metric, but to flag anything unusual and hear what is happening in your vertical.
  • Proactive communication when something changes on your side — a new content section launching, a traffic dip you have noticed, a campaign you are considering scaling up or down. Your account manager can only help if they know what is happening.
  • Honest feedback on campaigns that are not converting — rather than quietly pausing something, a short note about why it did not work for your audience helps the network improve its matching of offers to publishers over time.
  • Asking questions before you run into problems — if you are unsure whether a particular promotional approach is compliant, or whether an offer is right for a new audience segment you are developing, ask. Networks would far rather answer a question upfront than manage a compliance issue afterwards.

Framing the Network as a Business Partner

One mental shift that tends to improve publisher-network relationships significantly is moving from a consumer mindset — what can I take from this network? — to a partner mindset: what can we achieve together, and what do I need to contribute to make that work?

This matters because networks, like any business relationship, respond to investment. An account manager who knows your goals, understands your audience, and trusts your communication is far better placed to advocate for you when new advertiser opportunities arise, when rate reviews are being considered, or when compliance questions need to be navigated quickly.

Publishers who operate as genuine partners — reliable, communicative, professionally run — tend to be the first to hear about exclusive campaigns, the first to receive rate uplifts when budget allows, and the first to be consulted when an advertiser is looking for specific publisher profiles. That is not favouritism; it is the natural result of a well-functioning partnership.
